Muslims can be found in all mainland countries, but the most significant populations are in southern Thailand and western Burma Arakan. The Cham people of central Vietnam and Cambodia are also Muslim. Islam is the state religion in Malaysia and Brunei. Muslims are a minority in Singapore and the southern Philippines. Virtually all of Southeast Asia lies between the tropics, and so there are similarities in climate as well as plant and animal life throughout the region.
Geography of Asia reviews geographical concepts of classifying Asia , the central and eastern part of Eurasia , comprising approximately fifty countries. The land mass of Asia is not the sum of the land masses of each of its regions, which have been defined independently of the whole. For example, the borders of Central Asia and the Middle East depend on who is defining them and for what purpose. These varying definitions are not generally reflected in the map of Asia as a whole; for example, Egypt is typically included in the Middle East, but not in Asia, even though the Middle East is a division of Asia. The border with Europe starts with the coast of the eastern Mediterranean, even though Turkey in the Near East extends partly into the Aegean Islands and includes Istanbul on the European side of the Bosphorus.
Asia makes up the eastern portion of the Eurasian supercontinent ; Europe occupies the western portion. The border between the two continents is debated. Asia is bordered by the Arctic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
It occupies the eastern four-fifths of the giant Eurasian landmass. Asia is more a geographic term than a homogeneous continent, and the use of the term to describe such a vast area always carries the potential of obscuring the enormous diversity among the regions it encompasses. In addition, the peoples of Asia have established the broadest variety of human adaptation found on any of the continents. The name Asia is ancient, and its origin has been variously explained. The Greeks used it to designate the lands situated to the east of their homeland.
