When most people think of orchids, they envision large showy, delicate, exotic flowers hanging from a moist limb on a large tree in a dark tropical forest or an expensive flower in their local flower shop. The orchids envisioned might look like one of those shown on the right. Interestingly many orchids are small and quite a few of the species are rather un-showy. The diversity of orchids in fact is huge, as the orchid family is the largest of all flowering plant families. To be exact there are over 30, orchid species occurring on every continent.

Calyptranthes thomasiana Thomas' lidflower is a rare species of plant in the family Myrtaceae. It is found on three islands in the Caribbean. There are fewer than individuals total divided amongst the islands of Vieques in Puerto Rico , St. Virgin Islands , where it was first described in ,  and now only grows there in cultivation.
Virgin Islands , group of about 90 small islands, islets, cays, and rocks in the West Indies , situated some 40 to 50 miles 64 to 80 kilometres east of Puerto Rico. The islands extend from west to east for about 60 miles and are located west of the Anegada Passage , a major channel connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Their combined land area is about square miles square kilometres. The former is a British colony consisting of four larger islands— Tortola , Anegada , Virgin Gorda , and Jost Van Dyke —and 32 smaller islands and islets, of which more than 20 are uninhabited.
